Rolling stockRolling stock.

Our customers require the delivery of many different types of cargo. Depending on cargo specific weight, various types of containers and flatcars are employed.

We own and operate about 24,500 flatcars of three types: 40ft, 60ft and 80ft. which gives us the flexibility to address any customer request and ensure efficient utilisation of our assets.

A 40ft A specialised type of rolling stock designed to carry ISO containers. A specialised type of rolling stock designed to carry ISO containers. flatcar offers the greatest flexibility because it can carry one 40ft or two 20ft containers and has a greater cargo weight tolerance compared to 60ft and 80ft flatcars. A 60ft flatcar can carry more railway cargo in containers than a 40ft flatcar, but has certain limits with respect to the weight of cargo in containers. An 80ft flatcar is predominantly used for transportation of two 40ft containers with light-weight cargo. It provides the maximum unit capacity and hence the maximum efficiency, but has certain weight limitations.

Containers are divided into medium-duty (three- and five-tonne), which conform to former Soviet Union standards and are still used for shipments in Russia and the CIS, and ISO (20- and 40-foot) containers, which are used for Russian and international shipments. The universal standard unit TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) was introduced to measure transport flow volumes. container . carriage of three 20ft containers with limited weight is possible.

Increase forwarding capacity on high traffic destinations.

80ft flatcars Designed to carry two 40ft containers or combination of 40ft and 20ft containers subject to bearing capacity limit of 69-70 tons.

Most efficient for routes where substantial amount of light-weight cargo is transported.

Flatcar Fleet Structure.

In the process of our incorporation, we acquired predominantly 40ft and 60ft flatcars and no 80ft flatcars. Given the low share of 80ft flatcars in our fleet, we have been focusing our investment activities on increasing the number of 80ft flatcars, aiming to achieve higher fleet efficiency as 80ft flatcars have lower operating and maintenance costs per TEU transported than any other types of flatcars we use.

Fleet structure optimisation secures higher rates of railcar fleet capacity use by avoiding weight and size limitations for our transportation equipment on each particular rail cargo route.

Flatcar Fleet Age.

The expected useful life of a new A specialised type of rolling stock designed to carry ISO containers. A specialised type of rolling stock designed to carry ISO containers. flatcar is 32 years. The useful life of a flatcar can generally be extended by 10 additional years by performing a complete overhaul of the flatcar. As a result of our fleet modernisation activities, we have reduced the average fleet age to about 15 years from more than 22 years.

We own and operate several types of containers. The majority of our containers are standard intermodal 20ft and 40ft ISO containers. We also operate specialised 20ft and 40ft containers (thermo-insulated containers, open-top containers and others). We also possess medium-duty containers (MDCs) of 3- and 5-tonnes capacity which are currently rented to Russian Railways to carry rail cargo.

ISO containers.

Currently we own approximately 64,500 ISO containers, approximately 56 percent of our ISO containers were 40ft containers and approximately 44 percent were 20ft containers (by TEU capacity.

Specialised Containers and Container Fitting Systems.

In addition to standard ISO containers, we own, handle and operate a variety of specialised containers and Transportation equipment for shipping cargo via various means of transport. Thermos containers are used for the transportation of liquid or semi-liquid perishable cargos, such as juice and beer, etc. Currently, our park of thermos containers consists of about 2,500 units, all of which were manufactured at our Shakhunya depot.

We operate our clients’ refrigerator containers, used for the transportation of perishable and frozen rail cargo. Our terminals are equipped with charging facilities for refrigerator containers.

We also operate tank containers which are used for the transportation of foodstuffs, chemicals and liquid cargos in partnership with DB Shenker BTT, specialising in the transportation of chemical cargos in tank containers between Russia and Western Europe.

In addition to specialised containers, we utilise container fitting systems such as flexi-tank and dry-bulk cargo container fitting systems. The flexi-tank container fitting system is a removable plastic bag that fits into a standard 20ft ISO container. It is used for the transportation of liquid cargos of up to 24 tons.

The dry-bulk cargo container fitting system is also a removable fence that may be affixed at the entrance of a standard 20ft ISO container. It is used for the transportation of railway cargo such as grain.
